MOUNTED PATROL

The Broken Arrow Police Department’s newest specialty unit, the Broken Arrow Mounted Patrol, is an older concept to policing applied in a new era.

The Mounted Patrol Unit is a non-conventional means to aid in problem-solving, crime prevention, crime suppression, and provide a visible presence in the furtherance of community policing philosophies. The MPU will support field deployments and enhance safety at various events while promoting positive relationships with the community.

The Mounted Patrol Unit is one of only three in Northeast Oklahoma. The unit is staffed with fulltime officers and the horses are privately owned by the officers but are considered “Reserve Officers” when deployed. The Broken Arrow Police Department currently has 14 horse teams. Each horse has passed a rigorous training program and continues to maintain continuing education throughout the year.

The Mounted Patrol offers many benefits. The horses can search for missing persons through very rugged terrain including terrain that ATV’s cannot get through. We also have an Honor Guard aspect for display of the riderless horse. The Mounted Patrol unit cultivates our connection with Oklahoma’s culture and our citizens while providing additional services.
